Facial Trauma Reconstruction

Facial Trauma Reconstruction Surgeon - Dr. Stettler - Restore Functionality & More

Facial trauma, and recovering from it, has a significant impact on one’s life. It’s vital to repair and restore the face correctly and completely—with the help of experienced professionals. Lead by Dr. Randall Stettler, our Grossmont Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center in San Diego provides care to treat and manage moderate to severe facial trauma.

Who Can Benefit from Facial Reconstruction?

Facial damage can happen to anyone. Whether from a car accident, violence or another cause completely, these injuries are often best treated with facial reconstruction. Common facial injuries include fractured teeth, fractured jaws, fractured facial bones, missing teeth, lacerations and intraoral lacerations. Patients with any of the following injuries can benefit from facial reconstruction with an oral or maxillofacial surgeon.

• Avulsed, or knocked out, teeth, which requires prompt treatment to ensure a successful outcome.
• Soft-tissue injuries, which includes skin lacerations and intraoral damage.
• Bony injuries, which covers all bones in the face, including jawbones, cheekbones, noses, eye sockets and palates.
• Special regions, which includes facial nerves, salivary glands and the eyes.
Repairing damage to the face is more than aesthetic. Even a seemingly small injury can result in serious dental and health concerns and should not be taken lightly.

What Does Facial Reconstruction Entail?

The course of treatment used for facial reconstruction depends on the type and extent of the injury. When bones of the face are fractured, they are treated in essentially the same manner as a broken bone in a different part of the body. Instead of a plaster cast, bones are held firmly in place with wire or plates and screws. Any soft tissue damage is treated right away with stitches.

When a tooth has been knocked out, many oral surgeons will attempt to reinsert it. Time is of the essence, though, and the faster this procedure can be performed, the higher the success rate. If the natural tooth can’t be reinserted, a dental implant can usually take its place, restoring both appearance and function. Damaged teeth may also benefit from root canal therapy or “splinting” loose teeth to structural support to encourage repair.

At the first visit, patients can expect a thorough exam by Dr. Stettler in his San Diego office, who will then talk about options and determine the best course of treatment.
